A quick visit to the Saarbrücken Christkindlmarkt

My birthday is next week, and as a special treat David booked us a hotel in Metz, France for the weekend.  On our drive down today we stopped to stretch our legs by walking around the Christmas Market in Saarbrücken (you'll notice that, being just a smidge south of Heidelberg it is refereed to by the more southern name "Christkindlmarkt" rather than "Weihnachtsmarkt").

I don't actually know the history of the city, but I am guessing it is one that was essentially obliterated during the war as there only a handful of older looking, pretty buildings like this one:

Around the outer edges of the city were more typical Saturday market stalls selling fresh produce, cheeses, etc (and mistletoe--if we had been heading home I would have bought some!):

There were lots of warmer or covered places to stop for a drink or snack at the various stalls:

I thought this gingerbread house themed candy stall was cute:

And, as always, there were many pretty things for sale:

The pyramid was pretty and sold good gluhwein and was right next to the Christmas themed children's Ferris wheel:

We also got a kick out of this, quite large (the photos shown only a small portion) North Pole Lego scene--Santa in just his undies waiting for the port-a-potty cracked us up:
