An Easter Egg Market

Today David, Marika and I drove about an hour from here, into the Odenwald, to the old walled city of Michelstadt to visit their Easter Egg Market.

Michelstadt is funny, the city has continued to grow around the original old town.  So, on the outside are very modern (and ugly) parking lots and chain stores.  Right in the middle of all that modern, big ox, ugliness is a lovely old wall:

Find a break in that wall (sorry about the restoration work marring the view):

Go through the rabbit hole--and it is like you have gone back in time:

The Ostereirmarkt is held inside the Odenwald Toy Museum, so we got to browse through old fashioned toy  exhibits:

and we also got to wander and see some really amazing hand decorated eggs and other handmade crafts (as well as live chickens and freshly hatched chicks).  All kinds.  MANY vendors did not allow photos, so this is only a tiny sampling.

(YES, those are standard sized egg shells which have been intricately carved out.  How do you do that without splitting the shell into a million little pieces?)

Marika and I liked the boldly colored eggs above best.  They are dyed and then the design is etched out revealing the while shell beneath.

There was also a glass blower, and children could make a small ball to take home for a very reasonable 2 Euro:

Here is some of his work (I chose chickens/roosters in honor of my niece, Ellie)

After seeing all the interesting ways to decorate a simple egg, we headed back out of town.  No trip to a new German town is complete without ducking into the local church and admiring the stained glass though, so we made a quick detour for that purpose:

All in all a very nice little day trip today.  Many thanks to Karla for telling me about the market!

I hope you all had a nice Saturday as well.
